Cork University Hospital (CUH) is Irelandβs largest university teaching hospital and the countryβs only Level 1 Trauma Centre. It delivers tertiary services to a population of approximately 1.1 million people and employs around 5,000 staff across a wide range of professional disciplines. CUH is also the primary teaching hospital for the Faculty of Health and Science at University College Cork.
The Biomedical Engineering Department comprises nineteen engineers and one administrative support staff member.
Biomedical Engineers provide technical and clinical support for a wide range of complex medical devices across multiple clinical areas, including operating theatres, maternity services, intensive care units, dialysis, cardiology, endoscopy, laboratories, and other specialist services.
Medical equipment support is delivered through:
In-house engineering services
Service agreements with medical device suppliers
A combination of in-house engineers, supplier engineers, and clinical specialists
Engineers from the Biomedical Engineering Department actively participate in multidisciplinary Product Evaluation Groups (PEGs) as part of public procurement tendering processes. In this role, they:
Develop technical specifications aligned with clinical requirements
Participate in product evaluations alongside other PEG members
Oversee the installation, commissioning, and documentation of medical devices
Biomedical Engineers also provide clinical consultancy and technical advice to:
Business managers
Service managers
Medical staff
Health and social care professionals
In addition, engineers deliver training on specialist medical equipment to clinical colleagues, including:
Anaesthetic Department
School of Nursing
Intensive Care Units
Engineers based at Cork University Hospital provide ongoing support to:
