Professional / Clinical Responsibilities
The CNM1 will:
Coordinate, assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care in line with service standards.
Deliver safe, comprehensive nursing care in accordance with NMBI standards, HSE policies, local protocols, and current legislation.
Manage an assigned caseload appropriate to the role.
Promote evidence-based practice and structured care planning.
Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
Engage service users, families, and carers in care planning and decision-making.
Communicate assessments, care plans, outcomes, and recommendations effectively.
Plan and coordinate discharge or transition of care as required.
Support staff leadership, motivation, and performance.
Ensure dignity, respect, confidentiality, and ethical practice at all times.
Maintain accurate nursing documentation.
Contribute to clinical governance, standards development, audits, and quality improvement initiatives.
Lead and support service change aligned with national nursing and health reform strategies.
Practice within scope, seeking guidance where required.
Health & Safety
The CNM1 will:
Maintain a safe clinical environment for service users, staff, and visitors.
Ensure compliance with health and safety, infection prevention, and medication management policies.
Identify, report, and act on risks and incidents, including near misses.
Maintain awareness and compliance with HIQA standards and HSE protocols.
Promote sustainability initiatives related to energy, water, and waste reduction.
Education and Training
The CNM1 (ICU) will:
Engage in continuous professional development and remain current with best practice.
Provide clinical leadership, supervision, and mentorship to staff and students.
Support nurse education programmes and assess student clinical competence.
Participate in performance reviews and personal development planning.
Personnel and Administrative Responsibilities
The CNM1 will:
Deputise for the CNM2 as required.
Coordinate staffing, skill mix, and resource utilisation within the ICU.
Monitor service activity and report trends to senior management.
Contribute to budgeting, service planning, and evaluation.
Promote equality, diversity, and respect in the workplace.
Ensure maintenance and safe use of patient care equipment.
Participate in nursing management structures and IT developments.
Performance Management and KPIs
Develop, implement, and monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) aligned with service plans.
Prepare action plans to address KPI targets.
Promote a performance management culture within the service.
Risk Management, Infection Control & Hygiene
Uphold responsibilities for risk management, infection prevention, hygiene services, and health & safety.
Comply with organisational policies, training requirements, and reporting procedures.
Foster a continuous quality improvement culture within the ICU.
General Conditions
Comply with fire safety, infection control, incident reporting, and hospital policies.
Adhere to uniform and workplace safety requirements.
